Ludlow Castle is a ruined medieval fortification in the town of the same name in the English county of Shropshire, standing on a promontory overlooking the River Teme. The castle was probably founded by Walter de Lacy after the Norman Conquest and was one of the first stone castles to be built in England.
Throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, Ludlow Castle was held by the Crown, except for a brief time during the Civil War and the Commonwealth. COUNCIL OF THE MARCHES. The castle held great status as the centre of administration for the shires of the Marches and for Wales.
Open 11am - 4pm. VISITOR ADMISSION TICKETS. Tickets are also available to purchase on arrival. Membership available from April 2024. Tours of the castle with archaeologist Leon Bracelin are held on the first 3 Saturdays of the month at 12 noon and 2pm. Tours are free (admission charges apply)
The construction of the Ludlow Castle started around 1085, with many later additions in the following two centuries. It is one of the most interesting castles in the Marches, in a dominant and imposing position high above the river Teme. It features examples of architecture from the Norman, Medieval and Tudor periods.

Jun 30, 2023 · Ludlow Castle is a stunning ruin, in private hands, but open to the public. It boasts fine walls, a huge outer bailey, an inner bailey with beautiful apartments and a round chapel based on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
The historic town centre and the 11th century Ludlow Castle are situated on a cliff above the River Teme and are surrounded by the beautiful countryside of south Shropshire and the Welsh Marches. Ludlow is an excellent base for walking and cycling; as well as exploring the rest of Shropshire and the Welsh Marches.
