  2. John Mayall, a towering figure in the world of blues, has passed away at the age of 90. Known for his immense influence and prolific output, Mayall was instrumental in shaping the British blues scene.

    • Christone “Kingfish” Ingram. From his beginnings as a child prodigy in his hometown of Clarksdale, Mississippi, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram has become an ambassador for the younger generation of blues artists.
    • Cedric Burnside. For Mississippi Hill Country drummer and guitarist Cedric Burnside, the blues is the family business. He first went on tour with his grandfather, Hill Country blues superstar R.L.
    • Alabama Slim. Alabama Slim, the seven-foot-tall elder statesman of the New Orleans blues scene, put out his newest album, The Parlor, this January. Starting with his post-Katrina album The Mighty Flood, Slim has recorded three albums with Music Maker Relief Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides assistance to older musicians in the American South.
    • Amythyst Kiah. Johnson City, Tennessee’s Amythyst Kiah got her start in her native Appalachia’s old-time and bluegrass music, but expanded her repertoire to include rock and blues.
    • Kaleo. Iceland isn’t a country best known for the blues, but Kaleo are working hard to change that perception. Their second studio album ‘A/B’, which they released in 2016, was a great success – selling almost 1 million copies worldwide.
    • The Marcus King Band. It is a real skill to play blues in a way that resonates with a mainstream audience. Fusing blues and soul, The Marcus King Band have struck that rare balance between catchy melodies and killer guitar solos.
    • Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown. I was lucky enough to see Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown in London shortly before Christmas last year. It was one of the best gigs I’ve been to in recent years.
    • Philip Sayce. When the British blues scene exploded in the late 1960s, guitarists were lauded for their technical prowess. The guitar formed the centrepiece of so many of those iconic songs.
  3. Jul 27, 2021 · So whatever I can do with my days — I’ll be 85 years old on the 30th of this month — I’m still trying to keep the blues alive, man. It’s not easy when you’re by yourself.
