Mar 18, 2001 · "Enemy at the Gates" is a powerful World War II drama about a battle for the city of Stalingrad, between Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. One question I liked to asked is "Who do you root for?" You can't root for the Nazis because they're the bad guys and you probaby root for the Soviets, despite the fact that Soviet Leader Joseph Stalin had purged most loyal communists in the 1930's.

Enemy at the Gates won't find too many friends at the box office -- fans of war movies (and of Jude Law) will appreciate it, but there isn't much for everyone else in this mid-March downer.
Enemy at the Gates is a war movie full of suspense and grittiness. Ed Harris really nails his role as a German master sniper. He steals every scene he is in. The cat and mouse game with the Russian and German sniper is depicted really well. But there is a glaring flaw that is so utterly obvious it broke my immersion and feeling of suspense ...
