    • American Gods. This is it. Of all the best Neil Gaiman books, American Gods comes out on top. This does come with a few caveats, however. American Gods isn’t a perfect novel; it is overly long and its protagonist is frustratingly bland compared to the rest of the book’s cast.
    • Neverwhere. Neverwhere was Neil Gaiman’s first novel. He had already made a massive name for himself in the American comics industry thanks to The Sandman but now he was stepping into the world of the novel, and what an entrance.
    • Smoke and Mirrors. I have already mentioned more than once that Neil Gaiman’s imagination is best seen through the lens of his short stories, and Smoke and Mirrors represents the very best of them.
    • Good Omens. Written as a joint effort by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, Good Omens is the book on this list with the biggest cult following. People who like this book really, really love it (myself included, of course).
    • American Gods. Authored by Neil Gaiman. First published in 2001. 635 pages — 4.11 on Goodreads. American Gods is a 2001 fantasy novel and the best book by Neil Gaiman.
    • Coraline. Authored by Neil Gaiman. First published in 2002. 176 pages — 4.10 on Goodreads. Coraline is a 2002 dark fantasy children's novel that's arguably Gaiman's most popular book thanks to its marvelous film adaptation.
    • The Graveyard Book. Authored by Neil Gaiman. First published in 2008. 312 pages — 4.15 on Goodreads. The Graveyard Book is a 2008 young adult fantasy novel inspired by Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book—except instead of a jungle, the novel is set in a place more familiar to Gaiman: a graveyard.
    • Good Omens. Authored by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. First published in 1990. 491 pages — 4.25 on Goodreads. Good Omens is a fantasy comedy novel co-written between Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.
  1. The only thing of Gaiman's I've read is The Graveyard Book, but I do know he is widely recognized. If it's no trouble, do you have that link? I can never seem to find good, full versions of comics (I borrowed Watchmen from a friend).

  2. The Ocean at the End of the Land is underrated. It’s fantasy and fiction, but it’s also childhood sadness and loneliness and memory. It’s beautiful. Good Omens is my most cherished book (of all time), but it’s not a sole Neil Gaiman work, so I’m not sure if it counts.

  3. Neil Gaiman is a Newbery and Carnegie Award–winning author of multiple children’s and YA works, including The Graveyard Book and Coraline. He takes children’s literature seriously, and so it follows that he recommends this book-length essay by award-winning children’s author Katherine Rundell.

  4. I have never read Watchmen (I am definitely planning on reading though) but I hear the praise it gets and I hear a lot that it gets regarded as the one of the greatest (sometimes the absolute greatest) comics of all time. Why is this and what makes it so good, and do you guys think it’s one of the greatest DC comics of all time? Share Add a Comment
