She died in 1975 of brain cancer. Early life. Hayward was born Edythe Marrenner on June 30, 1917, in the Brooklyn borough of New York City, the youngest of three children to Ellen (née Pearson) and Walter Marrenner. Her mother was of Swedish descent.
She was 57. Miss Hayward died of a seizure due to a malignant brain tumor. She had been undergoing chemotherapy for 2 1/2 years, according to her physician, Dr. Lee Siegel.
