Hitchin ( / ˈhɪtʃɪn /) is a market town in the North Hertfordshire district of Hertfordshire, England. The town dates from at least the 7th century. It lies in the valley of the River Hiz at the north-eastern end of the Chiltern Hills. It is 16 miles (26 km) north-west of the county town of Hertford, and 35 miles (56 km) north of London.

Hitchin market place from the tower of St Mary's Church. Hitchin is a historic market town in the north of Hertfordshire, four miles south-west of Letchworth Garden City. Interestingly the name 'Hitchin' was not used until the 17th century but the earliest record of a settlement here goes back 1000 years earlier, to the 7th century.

Hitchin’s parish church is the largest in Hertfordshire and is larger than a town of this size would have needed in Medieval times. Instead St Mary’s Church is testament to the wealth generated by the wool trade in the 14th and 15th centuries.
