Lyudmila Belousova was born on November 22, 1935, in Ul’yanovsk (now Simbirsk), Russia. She did not begin training as a skater until age 16. She met Protopopov in 1954. Under the direction of Igor Moskvin, the two started skating together; they later married. The duo made their first international appearance in 1958 and placed 13th.
