Baroda State was a kingdom within the Maratha Confederacy and later a princely state in present-day Gujarat. It was ruled by the Gaekwad dynasty from its formation in 1721 until its accession to the newly formed Dominion of India in 1949.

Baroda State, now known as Vadodara, was a ’21 Gun Salute’ Maratha princely state situated in present-day Gujarat. It was ruled by the Gaekwad dynasty from its establishment in 1721 until 1949 when it acceded to the newly formed Union of India.
Short History. The Gaekwad family of Baroda first rose to prominence in 1720–21 when Damajirao Gaekwad obtained from Shahu Raja of Satara the exalted rank of Second-in-Command with the title of “Shamsher Bahadur”, or the Valiant Sword, for his bravery.
