Emerging in the late '80s, the quirky samples, bohemian clothes, and introspective lyrics of the Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, and De La Soul would be the enduring landmarks of a hip-hop "alternative."
Alternative hip hop (also known as alternative rap and experimental hip hop[2]) is a subgenre of hip hop music that encompasses a wide range of styles that are not typically identified as mainstream.
- 'The Low End Theory' The second album from A Tribe Called Quest dialed back the quirkiness of their debut (without erasing it entirely), and embraced a more subdued, jazz-oriented sonic texture.
- 'Aquemini' OutKast had shattered expectations on their sophomore album ATLiens by foregoing the teenage pimp fantasies of their debut and going in more cerebral direction.
- '3 Feet High and Rising' From Day 1, Posdnous, Trugoy and Maseo were unapologetically weird. The foundations for alt-rap had been forged by the Ultramagnetic MCs and the Jungle Brothers, but it was De La Soul's masterful debut album that proved that hip-hop's quirkier side could be both commercially viable and sustainable as a subgenre.
