Motheo District Municipality. Coordinates: 29°07′S 26°13′E. Motheo ( Sesotho, meaning "foundation" or "cornerstone") was, until the municipal elections of 18 May 2011, a district of the Free State province of South Africa.

Before the municipal elections of 18 May 2011, Mangaung was a local municipality within the Motheo District Municipality. In the municipal elections held on 1 November 2021, the African National Congress won 51 out of 100 seats on the Metro Council, while the Democratic Alliance won 26 seats and the Economic Freedom Fighters won 12 seats.
The three municipalities of Mangaung, Mantsopa and Naledi fall within Motheo and include the city of Bloemfontein and other towns like Ladybrand, Hobhouse, Tweespruit, Wepener, Dewetsdorp, Thaba Phatswa. Did you know?
The Motheo District was disenabled on 18 May 2011. When this happened; of its three constituent local Municipalities: Mangaung was upgraded to become an autonomous metropolitan Municipality, Naledi became part of Xhariep, and Mantsopa became part of Thabo Mofutsanyane.
