I think Yue Qingyuan feels a ton of regret and wants to make up for it. Do I think he loves him? Ehhhh... hard to say. If he loved him YQY would've spilled the secret to ease Shen Jiu's sense of abandonment even if only a little, but he could never push himself to do it until it was too late.
Yue Qingyuan acted with good intentions and is overall a good person, but in the end preferred to wallow in his own self-pity instead of resolving the situation between him and Shen Jiu, unwittingly sending him down a spiral of hatred that would doom both of them and the whole world.
But the world treated him in a terrible way when he was young, he's too proud to clear up the misunderstanding with Yue Qingyuan (who's also too noble and feeling too guilty to try and resolve the conflict), and so he just makes everything worse for himself.

Yue Qingyuan 「岳清源 (Yuè Qīngyuán)」, also known as the Xuan Su Sword 「玄肃剑 (Xuánsù Jiàn)」, is the Sect Master of Cang Qiong Mountain Sect and the Peak Lord of Qiong Ding Peak. He is said to be the most powerful cultivator in his era, to the extent that he could win a fight without ever drawing his sword.[?]
In Proud Immortal Demon Way, he was a minor character who was killed off by Luo Binghe.[?] In Scum Villain's Self-Saving System, he is a side character.
In the novel, Yue Qingyuan is described as a young and handsome looking man with an air akin to a very amiable elder brother. He dresses in the xuan duan style robes, mainly wearing the color black.[?]
In the donghua, Yue Qingyuan wears black and grey robes with silver accents. The top half of his hair is pulled back into a tight bun, with the rest hanging loose down his back.[?]

Yue Qingyuan was originally an orphan named Yue Qi, who would beg on the street alongside Shen Jiu. After the latter was purchased as a slave, Yue Qi left to become a cultivator. He entered Qiong Ding Peak and eventually rose to become a head disciple. While participating in the Immortal Alliance Conference, he was almost assassinated by Wu Yanzi, but was rescued by Shen Qingqiu. Thus he helped Shen Qingqiu join the sect, and would be especially indulgent with him. As head disciple of the Qiong Ding Peak, he naturally rose to become the sect leader of Cang Qiong Mountain Sect.
In the original story Proud Immortal Demon Way, he willingly walked into an obvious trap for Shen Qingqiu's sake. It's said that he was pierced by so many arrows that even his bones ceased to exist. After his death, Luo Binghe used his Xuan Su sword to taunt Shen Qingqiu.[?] In Scum Villain's Self-Saving System, he never faced this ordeal, because of how much Shen Yuan's involvement had altered the plot. It is also revealed that during his time as a disciple, he experienced a qi deviation, which set him back further from his goal of rescuing Shen Jiu.
Yue Qingyuan is in possession of the Xuan Su Sword 「玄肃剑 (Xuánsù Jiàn)」. Due to a qi deviation in the Lingxi Caves, his soul is bonded to his sword.
