Yeah, I'm not sure why Scorsese decided to make Cape Fear and Shutter Island, the latter of which is a pretty overwrought and transparent psychodrama. I love "Cape Feare", one of the best Simpsons episodes ever and it shows up the Scorsese film for the campy nonsense it is.

What makes Cape Fear such a good film is the rapidly increasing sense of claustrophobia. Scorcese makes a point of using almost only close up shots towards the end of the film. It is a great touch that makes the viewer that much more scared as the film goes on.
