Jaffna (Tamil: யாழ்ப்பாணம், romanized: Yāḻppāṇam, IPA: [jaːɻpːaːɳɐm]; Sinhala: යාපනය, romanized: Yāpanaya, IPA: [jaːpənəjə]) is the capital city of the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. It is the administrative headquarters of the Jaffna District located on a peninsula of the same name.

- JAFFNA IS VERY DIFFERENT TO THE REST OF SRI LANKA. “Jaffna is different”, we were told, by just about every Sri Lankan we came across. “It’s so different from the south.
- JAFFNA HISTORY | THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT. Jaffna has a complicated past, most obviously as the forefront of a decades-long bloody civil war that claimed the lives of more than 80,000 civilians.
- THERE’S STILL RESENTMENT TOWARDS THE SOUTH. While the civil war ended 10 years ago, resentment towards the Sinhalese Government and the south remains.
- BUT NOW IS THE TIME TO VISIT JAFFNA… We kinda feel like now is the best time to visit Jaffna. The war is over and investment is flooding in; there are new hotels and restaurants opening all the time, and a shiny new train is bringing visitors further north than they have ventured in decades.

- EXPLORE THE ANCIENT JAFFNA FORT. If we’re being honest, we’ll admit that we didn’t find Jaffna Fort as beautiful as its insta-famous southern counterpart, Galle Fort.
- ADMIRE THE COLOURFUL AND ANCIENT NALLUR KANDISWAMY HINDU TEMPLE. Absolutely stunning; that's the only way we can describe the incredible Nallur Kandiswamy, a Hindu temple dedicated to Skanda/Murugan – the god of love, war and beauty.
- EMBRACE LOCAL LIFE AT JAFFNA MARKETS. Visiting the local market of Thirunelveli was hands down our favourite thing to do in Jaffna. We arrived at 7am to find the markets already thriving; a swirling cacophony of smells, colours and shouting that can only be found in a truly authentic local market.
- EXPLORE JAFFNA’S OUTER ISLAND, INCLUDING DELFT ISLAND. Long, arduous, yet definitely satisfying - our day-trip to Delft Island (Neduntheevu in Tamil, or Neduntivu in Sinhala) was certainly unique, and one of our favourite things to do in Jaffna.
