Jun 15, 2022 · Strictly speaking, Sanjuro can’t be called a ‘sequel’ to Yojimbo, since it seems to take place in a slightly earlier period of Japanese history. Yojimbo is exactly placed in the 1860s, the final years of the Tokugawa era, when the rigid social structure of shogunate Japan was breaking down.
I liked Sanjuro more when I first saw them both but over time I have switched to preferring Yojimbo. Even if it doesn’t move as quickly with incident, it has more energy in the filmmaking at trying new things.

Dec 1, 2019 · This month’s film for the Akira Kurosawa Film Club is Sanjuro, Kurosawa’s 1962 sequel to Yojimbo. Kurosawa had not originally planned to direct a sequel to his 1961 samurai film, but following the film’s massive critical and commercial success, his studio Toho asked him to seriously consider the idea.
Sanjuro(sequel to Yojimbo) is not quite on the same level, but it is a fine film regardless and perhaps alongside The Hidden Fortress Kurasawa's most accessible film.
