Apr 16, 2015 · CINCINNATI (AP) — David Michener had planned on raising a family with two dads. He and William Ives, a couple for 18 years, had adopted three children and were bringing them up in Cincinnati when they got married in Delaware in 2013. Barely a month later, Michener was widowed. Ives died unexpectedly of a heart infection at age 54.
In October 1997, suffering from terminal kidney disease, Michener opted to end his daily dialysis treatment that had kept him alive for four years. He said he had accomplished what he wanted and did not want further physical complications.
Tragically, William died unexpectedly shortly after their marriage. David joined this case to ensure that William’s death certificate accurately reflected their marriage.
