The name of the city of Buenos Aires ( Spanish pronunciation: [ˈbwenos ˈajɾes] ), the capital of Argentina, means "Good Airs" or "Fair Winds" in Spanish. There are other places, mostly in the Americas, that go by the same name.
It was first founded in 1536 by an expedition led by the Spaniard Pedro de Mendoza, who named it Nuestra Señora Santa María del Buen Aire (“Our Lady St. Mary of the Good Air”). He was made the first governor-general of the Río de la Plata region.
