There is a tradition of attributing poetry to Omar Khayyam, written in the form of quatrains (rubāʿiyāt رباعیات). This poetry became widely known to the English-reading world in a translation by Edward FitzGerald (Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, 1859), which enjoyed great success in the Orientalism of the fin de siècle.

May 27, 2020 · Edward Fitzgerald…did not set out to translate the quatrains of Omar Khayyam. In a letter he remarks `God Forbid' that he should be thought to be translating. He was, in fact, working in the now almost forgotten tradition of the Imitation.
In 1882, he published a translation of 253 quatrains; in 1883, he published an edition of the Persian text of 500 quatrains, from a variety of sources, along with verse translations; and in 1893, he published a new translation of 267 quatrains.
