In May 1826, at the age of 17, he was appointed a teacher in English Literature and History at the new Hindu College, which had been set up recently to meet the interest in English education among Indians.

Derozio Memorial College was established in the year 1996 by the combined efforts of the local inhabitants of Rajarhat and the Rajarhat-Gopalpur Municipality. DMC College offers undergraduate courses in all three streams of Arts, Commerce and Science and the admissions are done on the CBCS system.

Derozio Memorial College was set up in 1996 with the spontaneous co-operation of local inhabitants and the sustaining effort of the erstwhile Chairman and members of Rajarhat-Gopalpur Municipality. The college was named after Henry Louis Vivian Derozio, the doyen of 'Young Bengal Movement' and the first Anglo-Indian poet of the 19th century.
