The Ajanta Caves are 30 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments dating from the second century BCE to about 480 CE in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state in India. Ajanta Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There are five Early caves at Ajantā which include two Chaityagṛhas (space housing the stūpa used for congregational worship by Buddhists) Cave 9 and 10, and three vihāras (caves that have dwelling cells for monks) Cave 12, 13 and 15A.

The caves are situated 100 km north-east of Ellora, 104 km from Aurangabad and 52 km from Jalgaon Railway Station. They are cut into the volcanic lava of the Deccan in the forest ravines of the Sahyadri Hills and are set in beautiful sylvan surroundings.
