Wagah border history goes back to when British rulers left the Indian subcontinent in 1947. It came into existence as the country was divided into Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan. Wagah Border between India and Pakistan is an army outpost today. Relations between the two countries have been tense throughout. But the daily ceremony has been in practice by the army since 1959. Attari-Wagah is also one of the main access points to Pakistan.

The Wagah Border Ceremony is a military practice carried out by the Indian Border Security Force and Pakistan Rangers. The soldiers treat it with absolute seriousness. It begins with a parade by the soldiers from both the sides, ending with a coordinated lowering of the flags of both the nation. As the sun sets, the iron gate is opened, with an infantryman standing in attention at both sides of the gate. The flags of India and Pakistan are lowered simultaneously and then folded.

These buses leave from dock 23, and a hawker will direct you to the right bus. A ticket is 35 INR per person, and the journey takes roughly one hour. The bus also stops at Amritsar Railway Station.

With militancy at its peak in Punjab, visiting the border areas was not high on the agenda of most people but as a first year student in an Amritsar college, I had time on my hands during weekends. Best transportation is private vehicle Innova type & if you want VIP sitting you have to get passes from BSF you have to reach by 4. Hire taxi for to-fro amritsar wagah border for 900/- rps.. (35 min drive) you don't need any pre booking; but try to reach there by 4 PM for decent seating.
