Our deep, on-the-ground work in Education has laid the foundation for expanding our work into Health and Livelihoods. We are a not-for-profit organisation working towards a just, equitable, humane and sustainable society. Our work is focused on India.
Our grants work emerges from our vision to contribute towards a just, equitable, humane and sustainable society. We support 1,150 not-for-profits and and civil society organisations (CSOs) across India with financial grants. A significant percentage of our grants goes to organisations working on the ground directly with vulnerable groups of people.
Azim Premji set up the Foundation in 2001. Over the past years, he has irrevocably donated most of his wealth for philanthropic purposes and created a philanthropic endowment valued (as of Jan 2023) at approximately USD 29 billion ( INR 2,40,000 crore) to fund the work of the Foundation.
What We Do. Education is where our story began, and it continues to be at the centre of our efforts. We focus on providing quality education to all, through the country’s vast network of government schools.
Premji started with a $2.2 billion donation to the Azim Premji Foundation, focused on education in India. He topped the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List for 2020. In 2019, he dropped from the 2nd position in the Forbes India Rich list to 17th position after giving away a huge amount to charity.
