India accepted the convention on 14 November 1977, making its sites eligible for inclusion on the list. There are 42 World Heritage Sites in India. Out of these, 34 are cultural, seven are natural, and one, Khangchendzonga National Park, is of mixed type. India has the sixth-most sites worldwide.

UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee holds its 46th session from 21 to 31 July 2024 in New Delhi (India). Among other things, it will examine the proposals of 27 sites for inscription on the World Heritage List, and the state of conservation of 124 sites already inscribed on the World Heritage List, and on the List of World Heritage in Danger.
