The Caroni Swamp is an estuarine system comprising 5,611 hectares of mangrove forest and herbaceous marsh, interrupted by numerous channels, and brackish and saline lagoons, and with extensive intertidal mudflats on the seaward side.
Caroni Swamp is a large mangrove wetland on the west coast of Trinidad, home to the Scarlet Ibis and over 100 bird species. It is protected under the Ramsar Convention and provides ecological, economic and cultural benefits for the island and the region.
I took a boat tour of the Caroni Swamp Bird Sanctuary. The swamp is surrounded by red mangroves and the guide pointed out many of the animals. Among the highlights were a tree boa, Caribbean Flamingos, and a flock of scarlet ibises returning to their nests.
