Besides India, it is also commemorated in Nepal and Bhutan by the Hindus, Jains and Buddhist communities living there.
The main tradition among guru-shishya is blessings (i.e. student greet his/her guru) by reciting poetry or quotes and the guru gives blessings for the success and happiness of an individual. In short, guru purnima is a traditional way for Indians to celebrate Teacher's Day.
