Pedro Gutiérrez de Valdivia or Valdiva ( Spanish pronunciation: [ˈpeðɾo ðe βalˈdiβja]; April 17, 1497 – December 25, 1553 [1]) was a Spanish conquistador and the first royal governor of Chile.
Pedro de Valdivia was a conqueror and governor of Chile for Spain and founder of the cities of Santiago and Concepción. Valdivia served with distinction in the Spanish army in Italy and Flanders before being sent to South America in 1534.

Pedro de Valdivia ( b. c. 1500; d. 1553), Spanish conquistador and founder of Chile. Before undertaking the expedition to Chile, Valdivia had already acquired extensive military experience. He entered the army in 1521, participated in the Spanish campaigns in Flanders and Italy, and fought in the battle of Pavia (24 February 1525).
