Power = Work / time. or. P = W / t. The standard metric unit of power is the Watt. As is implied by the equation for power, a unit of power is equivalent to a unit of work divided by a unit of time. Thus, a Watt is equivalent to a Joule/second. For historical reasons, the horsepower is occasionally used to describe the power delivered by a machine.
By definition, one watt is equal to one joule of work done per second. So if P represents power in watts, Δ E is the change in energy (number of joules) and Δ t is the time taken in seconds then: P = Δ E Δ t. There is also another unit of power which is still widely used: the horsepower.
