About 8 in 10 invasive breast cancers are invasive (or infiltrating) ductal carcinomas (IDC). IDC starts in the cells that line a milk duct in the breast. From there, the cancer breaks through the wall of the duct, and grows into the nearby breast tissues.
Invasive ductal carcinoma means that the cancer has spread or ‘invaded’ from its original location to the surrounding breast tissue. Ductal refers to the presence of cancer cells within the milk ducts of the breast.
Invasive breast cancer is different from ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). In invasive cancer, the cells have broken out of the duct and spread into the surrounding breast tissue. DCIS means that some cells have started to turn into cancer but these cells are all contained inside the ducts.
