For optical drives you can unmount the volume but the disk will still remain in the drive. Ejecting it removes the disk. For hard drives, however, for the most part the terms are pretty much interchangeable. johnsock.

Sep 24, 2006 · This drive has a button on the front (instead of a "paper clip hole") that usually ejects the disk, but it would not work while it was connected to the iMac. So I disconnected the zip drive, powered it off, then powered it on without connecting it to the Mac. At that point, pushing the button got the disk out.

Sep 30, 2012 · How can I eject my ipod when neither itunes not the "safe to eject" button will allow it. Itunes says "...cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application." The safe to eject button says "The device 'generic volume' cannot be stopped because a program is still accessing it." The has never happened before.

To eject the iPod, click on the device icon that appears at the top of the iTunes window when iTunes detects it: That takes you to the Device/Settings/Summary panel. At the top of Device screen is the eject icon: Note that the eject symbol does not appear until a Sync has completed.
