It is considered to be one of the classics of Hindi cinema and is based on humanistic psychology. It won a Silver Bear at the 8th Berlin International Film Festival and a Golden Globe Award in the Samuel Goldwyn International Film Award for best film produced outside of the United States category.

In an attempt to reform a group of murderers a jail warden takes them to farm in a barren land. There they are free and earn their daily bread by learning to farm. Slowly they are integrated into the society. Inspired by a true story, this film is a reflection of a new independent India.
Absolutely loved the way the film was shot. In an era of not much technical opulence, the crew displayed the magic of camera. Scenes without dialogues are much louder. The constant references of the core idea of the film, Do Ankhein and Baarah Hath, are beautifully shown.
