The Parachute Regiment is an airborne and special forces regiment of the Indian Army. It was raised in 1945 as part of the British Indian Army but was disbanded after World War II and was re-raised in 1952 as part of the Indian Army. Currently it consists of fifteen Special Forces, two Territorial Army and one Rashtriya Rifles battalions.
The Parachute Regiment were formed in WWII and, save 1968, have been in constant action since. Determined and Courageous, they earned the nickname “Red Devils” from German Paras in North Africa. Heroic actions in Normandy, Arnhem, the Falklands and Afghanistan are cemented in Regimental folklore.

The Parachute Regiment. On 2nd July 1941, spurred on by the German airborne capture of Crete and the Prime Minister’s urging, 11th Special Air Service Battalion was authorised to expand beyond the 1st Parachute Battalion to a brigade of four parachute battalions.
