   • 1. (1934–2017), US cult leader. He founded a commune based on free love and complete subordination to him. In 1969 its members carried out a series of murders, including that of the US actress Sharon Tate (1943–69), for which he and some followers received the death sentence (later commuted to life imprisonment).
