Alcindor began his record-breaking basketball accomplishments when he was in high school, where he led coach Jack Donohue's Power Memorial Academy team to three straight New York City Catholic championships, a 71–game winning streak, and a 79–2 overall record.

He then served as the head coach of Power Memorial Academy, from 1959 to 1965. At Power Memorial, Donohue had a career win–loss record of 163–30, including winning 71 straight games with the star center of his team, Lew Alcindor (later known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar ).
Established by the Congregation of Christian Brothers as a Catholic all boys high school in 1931, Power Memorial Academy was originally located on 15 West 124th Street in Harlem. In 1938, the school relocated to the former maternity hospital on Amsterdam Avenue and West 61st Street at Lincoln Square.
