Jaddanbai Hussain (1 April 1892 – 8 April 1949; known professionally as Jaddanbai) was an Indian singer, music composer, dancer, actress, filmmaker, and one of the pioneers of Indian cinema. She along with Bibbo and Saraswati Devi was one of the first female music composers in Indian cinema.

Dec 29, 2023 · Jaddanbai Hussain was born around 1892 to Mia Jaan and Daleepabai in then-Banaras. Miyan Jaan died when she was five. Jaddanbai moved to the city and became a singer. Jaddanbai then approached Shrimant Ganpat Rao (Bhaiya Saheb Scindia) of Calcutta to learn music and became his student.
However, her character, Jaddanbai, is a personality whose life could have warranted a film in itself, had it been better documented. Jaddanbai was the daughter of Daleepadevi, a courtesan who was kidnapped by a band of traveling performers in her childhood.
Jaddanbai played a pioneering role in Indian cinema in the early talkies era. She started off as an actress and was also one of the first women to produce, direct films and compose music for films. But her achievements have been overshadowed by her reputation as the legendary Nargis’s mother.
Jaddanbai was born in 1892 in Allahabad, North-Western Provinces, British India. She was a writer and director, known for Madam Fashion (1936), Hriday Manthan (1936) and Moti Ka Haar (1937). She died on April 8, 1949.
