The Convention on Cybercrime, also known as the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime or the Budapest Convention, is the first international treaty seeking to address Internet and computer crime (cybercrime) by harmonizing national laws, improving investigative techniques, and increasing cooperation among nations.
Primarily known as the Council of Europe Convention on Cybercrime, the Budapest Convention or the convention on cybercrime is the world’s first international treaty designed to focus on increasing cybercrime. It came into the picture in 2001 and entered into force on July 1, 2004.
A treaty to combat cybercrime by criminalising offences against computer systems and data, and facilitating international co-operation. It defines key terms, sets out substantive and procedural criminal law, and protects human rights and fundamental freedoms.
