Meera Syal CBE FRSL (born Feroza Syal; 27 June 1961) is an English comedian, writer, playwright, singer, journalist and actress. She rose to prominence as one of the team that created Goodness Gracious Me and by portraying Sanjeev's grandmother, Ummi, in The Kumars at No. 42 .
Meera Syal got married to journalist Shekhar Bhatia in 1989, and divorced in 2002. The couple together has a daughter named Chameli Bhatia (also known as Milli Bhatia); she is an associate director of the Royal Court Theatre.
In the TV series ‘The Kumars at No. 42,’ Meera Syal played the role of Sanjeev Bhaskar’s grandmother, who later became her real-life husband. The character of Sushila was revived by her in the BBC Radio 4’s show ‘Gossip and Goddesses with Granny Kumar’ in 2021.
