In a career spanning three decades, she delivered hits like Mother India, Raat Aur Din, Shree 420, Barsaat, Andaz, Jogan, Awaara, Deedar and Chori Chori. The legendary actor married Sunil Dutt and had three kids - Sanjay Dutt, Priya Dutt and Namrata Dutt. Nargis was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1980, but just a year later, she died of pancreatic cancer.
Since then she had been credited as “Nargis” in all of her films. She appeared in a number of super hit films of the 1940s and 1950s such as Andaz (1949), Barsaat (149), Shree 420 (1955), etc. She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her performance in Mehboob Khan’s rural drama Mother India (1957).
