Robert Southey (/ ˈ s aʊ ð i / or / ˈ s ʌ ð i /; 12 August 1774 – 21 March 1843) was an English poet of the Romantic school, and Poet Laureate from 1813 until his death. Like the other Lake Poets , William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge , Southey began as a radical but became steadily more conservative as he gained respect for Britain and its institutions.

Robert Southey. Southey was born 12 August 1774 in Bristol and raised through his early years mostly in Bath. He attended Westminster School in London, but after criticizing the school for excessive corporal punishment was expelled. That youthful crisis notwithstanding, he matriculated at Oxford in 1792, living in Balliol College.
