Derek Walcott. Sir Derek Alton Walcott KCSL OBE OM OCC (23 January 1930 – 17 March 2017) was a Saint Lucian poet and playwright. He received the 1992 Nobel Prize in Literature. [1] His works include the Homeric epic poem Omeros (1990), which many critics view "as Walcott's major achievement." [2]

The experience of growing up on the isolated volcanic island, an ex-British colony, has had a strong influence on Walcott’s life and work. Both his grandmothers were said to have been the descendants of slaves.

Derek Walcott is an honorary member of the American Academy and the Institute of Arts and Letters. In 2009 he was appointed Professor of Poetry at the University of Essex. His poetry collection White Egrets (2010) won the 2010 T. S. Eliot Prize.
In 1992, Walcott became the first Caribbean writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, and in 2015, he received the Griffin Trust for Excellence in Poetry’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
