History of Gauhati University. It was indeed a dream come true for thousands of people of Assam who had relentlessly agitated for decades for an institute of higher education in the province when Gauhati University was established on 26 January, 1948. For a long time, the only university in the entire eastern region was at Calcutta.

Any prospective student who wants to apply to Gauhati University and its affiliated colleges for admission into any postgraduate course MUST first register with the Departmenyt of Higher Education (DHE), Assam and ond obtain the DHE Unique ID.
GU offers Masters Programme in about 57 disciplines in Arts, Science & Technology, Law, Commerce & Management through its 49 postgraduate departments, affiliated colleges, and autonomous institutes. The admission process will end in admitting about 1800 students across its postgraduate departments.
