Mary Bryant (c. 1765 – after 1794) was a Cornish convict sent to Australia. She became one of the first successful escapees from the fledgling Australian penal colony. Early life[edit]
Mary Bryant (b.1765), convict, was baptized on 1 May 1765 at Fowey, Cornwall, England, the daughter of a mariner named Broad, whose family was 'eminent for sheep stealing'. On 20 May 1786 at the Exeter Assizes she, referred to as Mary Braund, was charged with assault and robbery, convicted and sentenced to death.

Mary's story begins in her home, Cornwall England where her village is starving to death. In desperation, she steals, landing her a place on the long voyage to Sydney along with other convicts. Pregnant by a jailer, Mary is befriended by a quick-witted smuggler named Will.

Mary Bryant was a Cornish-born daughter of a fisherman who became involved in petty theft after moving to Plymouth. In 1787 she was convicted for stealing a silk bonnet, jewellery, and a few coins and sentenced to seven years transportation to Australia.
