Margaret of Austria (25 December 1584 – 3 October 1611) was Queen of Spain and Portugal by her marriage to King Philip III & II . Life. Margaret was the daughter of Archduke Charles II of Austria and Maria Anna of Bavaria and thus the paternal granddaughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I.

Margaret of Austria (born January 10, 1480, Brussels [Belgium]—died December 1, 1530, Mechelen, Spanish Netherlands) was a Habsburg ruler who, as regent of the Netherlands (1507–15, 1519–30) for her nephew Charles (later the Holy Roman emperor Charles V), helped consolidate Habsburg dominion there.

Pantoja's portrait of Margaret of Austria, given as a gift to James I in 1605 following the peace treaty between England and Spain, follows in these traditions, though the ideology of Spanish Habsburg rule is more blatant than in earlier royal portraits.
In this portrait by Pantoja de la Cruz -the most representative painter of the reign- she wears the so-called “Rich jewel”, a dynastic heirloom comprising the diamond known as “El estanque” (The Pool) and the famous large pearl known as “La peregrina” (The Pilgrim).
