Prince William Henry, the third son and fifth child of Frederick, Prince of Wales and Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, was born on the 14th November 1743, and in 1764 was bestowed the titles of Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh, and Earl of Connaught.
The dukedom of Gloucester and Edinburgh was a royal dukedom when the duke was entitled to the style "His Royal Highness", as Prince William Henry was, but Prince William Frederick was only granted this style on his marriage in 1816.

Prince William Henry, duke of Gloucester (1743-1805), was the fifth child of Frederick, Prince of Wales and Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha. In 1762, he was installed as a knight of the Garter, and he wears the ribbon and star of the Order here.
