Prince and poet (b. 1459, Edirne – d. 25 February 1495, Naples). He was the younger son of Fatih Sultan Mehmet. After receiving education at the palace, he was appointed as the provincial governor of Kastamonu and as the governor of the Karaman province (1474).
Sultan Cem (Jem; died 1495), son of Mehmed the Conqueror, is an outstanding representative of their number. But soon the high-flown style of post-classical Persian was being imitated by Ottoman authors, rhetoric often being more important to them than poetical content.
Sultan Cem is most famous for being the Ottoman emperor who ruled for a brief period of time, from 1566 to 1574. He was the son of Sultan Selim II and his mother was Mihrimah Sultan, the daughter of Suleiman the Magnificent. He is also known for being the last Ottoman ruler to rule from Constantinople.
