Saul ( / sɔːl /; Hebrew: שָׁאוּל, Šāʾūl; Greek: Σαούλ, Saoúl; transl. "asked/prayed for") was a monarch of ancient Israel and Judah and the first king of the United Monarchy, according to the Hebrew Bible and Old Testament.

While the Bible paints a picture of Saul leading a burgeoning political and military power, there is little archaeological evidence to support the existence of an Israelite monarchy at such an early date.
