Joseph II (German: Josef Benedikt Anton Michael Adam; English: Joseph Benedict Anthony Michael Adam; 13 March 1741 – 20 February 1790) was Holy Roman Emperor from 18 August 1765 and sole ruler of the Habsburg monarchy from 29 November 1780 until his death.

Joseph II was an accomplished musician and his tastes informed musical life in Vienna during the 1780s: he was partial to German opera and opera buffa, Harmoniemusik (music for wind bands) and simple, accessible church music; he disliked elaborate court music, opera seria and ballet.
Having learned of his sister Marie-Antoinette’s profligate spending and careworn marriage, Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II decided to strike out for Versailles. Besides his brotherly concerns, he also came as a knowledgeable sovereign curious to discover the kingdom of France.
