Jul 31, 2020 · Leopoldina of Brazil was born on 13 July 1847 at the Imperial Palace of São Cristóvão in Rio de Janeiro as the third child and second daughter of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil, the younger brother of Queen Maria II of Portugal, and Teresa Cristina of the Two Sicilies.
Dona Maria Leopoldina of Austria (22 January 1797 – 11 December 1826) was the first Empress of Brazil as the wife of Emperor Dom Pedro I from 12 October 1822 until her death. She was also Queen of Portugal during her husband's brief reign as King Dom Pedro IV from 10 March to 2 May 1826.
Today green and yellow remain the dominant colours in the Brazilian flag, and the yellow is still there in homage to the Habsburg Princess Leopoldina. Leopoldina also dressed Pedro’s Imperial Life Guards in a new uniform modelled on that of the Bohemian Guards.

In October 1822, the two finally became the official Brazilian imperial couple. Brazil’s newly founded constitutional monarchy subsequently attracted a number of European immigrants, and Leopoldine acted as a generous mother of the country.
