Phu Dorjee Sherpa was the first Nepali man and 23rd person in the world to climb Mount Everest. He was a member of the third Indian Everest Expedition 1965, led by Captain M S Kohli, which was the first successful Indian Everest Expedition. The group consisted of 21 major expedition members and 50 Sherpas.
Phu Dorjee (also spelled Phu Dorji) was a Sherpa and the first Indian to summit Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen. He did so on May 5, 1984 on a solo ascent from the South East Ridge. Dorjee died in 1987 on the Kanchanjunga Expedition of the Assam Rifles.
Ang Dorje was born in 1970, in upper Pangboche, Nepal, near the Khumbu Valley as it passes down the slopes of Mount Everest. He grew up among Himalayan climbers; his father, Nima Tenzing Sherpa, was a climber with expeditions led by British mountaineer Chris Bonington in the 1970s and 1980s.
But in spite of this and to safe-guard their izzat, Dorjee Lhatoo, Rattan Singh and Phu Dorjee did a magnificent job by fixing the route upto the Yellow Band, a little over 25,000 ft. They were recalled to the base camp for recuperation.

Phu Dorje Sherpa summited Everest 2 times both via the standard South East Ridge route. First on October 2nd, 1988 on the American expedition led by James Frush. His second summit was on May 16th, 1989, but sadly he died on the way down...
