Edward Frederick Lindley Wood, 1st Earl of Halifax, KG, OM, GCSI, GCMG, GCIE, TD, PC (16 April 1881 – 23 December 1959), known as the Lord Irwin from 1925 until 1934 and the Viscount Halifax from 1934 until 1944, was a senior British Conservative politician of the 1930s.
Edward Frederick Lindley Wood, 1st earl of Halifax, British viceroy of India (1925–31), foreign secretary (1938–40), and ambassador to the United States (1941–46). As Neville Chamberlain’s foreign secretary, he was identified with the policy of appeasement toward Adolf Hitler.
The title was created for a fourth time in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 1944 for Edward Wood, 3rd Viscount Halifax, the former Foreign Secretary and former Viceroy of India. The Wood family descends from Francis Wood, of Barnsley.
