Soulfly. After leaving Sepultura in 1996, Max Cavalera formed Soulfly with the idea of combined sounds and spiritual beliefs after losing his stepson Dana Wells. Originally, with each new Soulfly album came a new line-up, as well as world music influences from a diverse array of locations.
Soulfly, the moniker Max conjured, is an original portmanteau like "Lookaway” or "Straighthate.” The idea rose from one of the indigenous spiritual practices that inspire Max. "Many South American tribes believe the souls of their ancestors fly around them when they play music.

Soulfly is the debut studio album by American heavy metal band Soulfly, released on April 21, 1998, through Roadrunner Records. The record was released in memory of frontman Max Cavalera 's deceased stepson and was the first album featuring Cavalera since leaving Sepultura two years prior.
