The National Waterway 1 (NW-1) or Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly river system is located in India and runs from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh to Haldia in West Bengal via Patna and Bhagalpur in Bihar across the Ganges river. It is 1,620 km (1,010 mi) long, making it the longest waterway in India.
NW-2 is the most important waterway in North East Region of India. It also provides connectivity with mainland India through Indo-Bangladesh Protocol route, thereby reducing congestion on the Siliguri Corridor (the only direct corridor connecting mainland India with North east).
The Ganga - Bhagirathi - Hooghly river system between Haldia (Sagar) and Prayagraj (1620 km) was declared as National Waterway-1 (NW-1) in 1986.
